Sultanas are a feminine gown for undress that begin appearing in English portraiture in the first part of the 18th century. They become even more popular as a choice for portraits and costume dress as the century progresses. Inspired by the Turkish fashions, these gowns may be worn in casual at home settings, but do not seem to be worn “in public”, unless worn to a costume event (i.e. a fancy dress ball where a person is attending dressed as a in a sultana gown.)
